CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers handed the No. 6 Florida Gators its first loss of the 2017 dual season on Saturday (Feb. 11). Virginia improves to a 5-4 record over Florida.
The Gators fell behind early by surrendering the doubles point to the Cavaliers, and were unable to pull out the win in the singles competition – which has proven to be the Gators' biggest strength so far this season.
Alfredo Perez and Johannes Ingildsen, the No. 6 doubles team in the nation, fought to keep the Gators in the running for the initial point, but the Cavaliers swept both courts two and three to secure the point.
In the singles competition, Virginia earned three hard-fought wins over Maxx Lipman, Chase Perez-Blanco and McClain Kessler to clinch the match. Perez and Ingildsen played out the remaining two singles matches to the finish, earning two points for the Gators.
Perez fought a close match to the end, defeating Virginia's Collin Altamirano 7-6 (7-1), 7-5 in the longest-lasting battle of the day. Ingildsen finished only slightly before his doubles partner with a tough three-set match that had momentum swinging in both directions. Ingildsen took the first set 6-2, but was defeated 6-0 in the second by Alexander Ritschard. The freshman came back strong in the third set, winning 6-3 to secure the first point for the Gators.
Quoting Head Coach Bryan Shelton
"Virginia played better than us on the critical points today in both singles and doubles overall. It was a good experience to play inside, and I know it helped to prepare us for National Team Indoors next week. We will watch the videos and figure out what we need to improve to reverse this result the next time.
"I really enjoy working with our coaches and players. We are all determined to keep improving every single day."
