GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Florida men's tennis team will welcome close to 100 players from 15 different schools to the Alfred A. Ring Complex this weekend for the 2019 ITA Southeast Regional Championships. The action begins on Thursday, Oct. 24, at 8:30 a.m., with two qualifying singles rounds. Main draw action will begin Friday, with the final day of competition set to conclude on Monday, Oct. 28.
The Gators will have eight players competing this weekend in Johannes Ingildsen, Andy Andrade, Duarte Vale, Josh Goodger, Brian Berdusco, Lukas Greif, Greysen Cacciatore and Blaise Bicknell.
Joining Florida at this year's ITA Southeast Regional are UCF, FAU, Florida Gulf Coast, Florida State, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Georgia, Kennesaw State, Mercer, Miami, North Florida, South Florida and Stetson.
Florida saw a great deal of success at last year's ITA Southeast Regionals, as the Gators had three players – Johannes Ingildsen, Andy Andrade and Duarte Vale – reach the quarterfinals in the main singles draw, while Ingildsen and Brian Berdusco took the doubles crown in last year's main doubles draw. Additionally, Florida had a pair of doubles teams reach the quarterfinals.
The Gators are coming off a strong showing at the ITA All-American Championships earlier this month, in which sophomore Sam Riffice finished as a singles finalist and Riffice and Oliver Crawford took home the consolation doubles title - notching automatic entries into the Oracle ITA Fall National Championships in Newport Beach, Calif.
Johannes Ingildsen and Brian Berdusco, the No. 4 nationally ranked doubles tandem, reached the quarterfinals at the ITA All-Americans in their best run of the fall slate thus far. Though the duo will split up this weekend in the main doubles draw, as Berdusco will partner with Duarte Vale and Ingildsen with Josh Goodger, Berdusco and Ingildsen will partake in the main singles draw.
Andrade, ranked No. 31 nationally in singles, enters this weekend's competition coming off an undefeated singles run to earn the Singles A title at the Bedford Cup in Tallahassee on Oct. 13-15. Featuring in the main singles and doubles draw (alongside Lukas Greif as the No. 5 seed), the junior holds a five-match win streak coming into the Regionals, as Andrade has tallied a 9-3 singles record this fall. On the other hand, Greif, ranked No. 70 nationally in singles, has compiled an impressive fall slate in recently prevailing through qualifying singles action at ITA All-Americans to reach the main draw. Greif has won six of his last eight singles matches, including two over ranked opponents, to hold a 9-5 singles record on the year thus far.
Junior Josh Goodger, ranked No. 68 nationally in singles, has certainly emerged as a valuable addition to the blue and orange through his performance this fall, tallying a 6-3 singles record, including three wins over ranked opponents. He also most recently competed at the ITA All-Americans, picking up two wins in the qualifying singles draw before falling in the final round. Goodger will partner with Ingildsen in the main doubles draw, while featuring in this weekend's main singles draw as well.
Duarte Vale looks to continue his hot streak this weekend, entering competition on a seven-match singles win streak, including two over ranked opponents, after notching two consecutive singles titles at the Seahawk Fall Invite (Sept. 13-15) and Southern Intercollegiate Championships (Sept. 27-29). Vale has also been solid in doubles play this fall, earning a doubles title at the Seahawk Fall Invite, as he will partner with classmate Brian Berdusco as the top seed in the main doubles draw, while featuring in the main singles draw.
Greysen Cacciatore enters the weekend on a four-match singles win streak upon claiming the Singles B title at the Bedford Cup (Oct. 13-15), joining Andrade in sweeping the event's singles competition. Despite a slow start to the fall coming off an impressive summer of competition, Cacciatore has improved over the month of October, as the sophomore will begin competition in the qualifying singles draw.
Lastly, freshman Blaise Bicknell has put together a strong fall slate in his time with the Gators, most recently competing at the Bedford Cup alongside Andrade and Cacciatore. Bicknell has notched a doubles title alongside Vale at the Seahawk Fall Invite (Sept. 13-15) and also finished as a finalist in the top singles draw at the event (falling to Vale). The first year has tallied an 8-3 singles record on the fall, earning wins in four of his past five matches, as he'll begin competition on Friday in the ITA Regionals' main singles draw.
