GAINESVILLE, Fla. – With fall competition winding down, the Gators prepare to close out the fall season on a high note in competing at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, held in Newport Beach, Calif. Duarte Vale (No. 52) and Lukas Greif (No. 70) will represent Florida in this week's singles competition, while the Gators' doubles duo of Johannes Ingildsen and Brian Berdusco (No. 4) will feature in doubles competition in Newport Beach. The event serves as the Gators' final tournament of the fall season before the team prepares for the spring dual season.
The Oracle ITA National Fall Championships features 128 of the nation's top collegiate singles players (64 men and 64 women) and 64 doubles teams (32 men's team and 32 women's teams). This week's competition marks consecutive appearances at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships for Vale, Ingildsen and Berdusco, while Lukas Greif makes his career debut at the annual event.
Junior Duarte Vale will look to cap a flawless fall slate in singles competition this week in Newport Beach. Holding titles from the Seahawk Fall Invite, Southern Intercollegiate Championships and ITA Southeast Regionals, an undefeated singles run is in reach for Vale in adding a national singles title to conclude his fall performance. Last year, the junior fell in the main draw's first round to reach the consolation quarterfinals at the event, though, Vale enters the week hungry for another title, holding a 13-0 singles record, including six wins over ranked opponents within the top-85.
Sophomore Lukas Greif makes his debut at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships this week, receiving an at-large selection into the event's singles competition. The Newburgh, Ind. native most recently reached the quarterfinals of the ITA Southeast Regionals, in which he fell to teammate and eventual champion, Duarte Vale. Greif has even seen ITF pro tournament action this fall, prevailing through qualifying singles at the M25 Houston (Sep. 16-22) to reach the main draw's quarterfinals among pro competition. The sophomore enters the tournament holding a 10-5 record in singles, including two wins over ranked opponents this fall.
Johannes Ingildsen and Brian Berdusco make their second consecutive appearance as a doubles tandem at the fall national championships after receiving an at-large selection into the event's doubles competition. The duo will look to follow up a solid performance at last year's event, as Ingildsen and Berdusco had reached the quarterfinals of the doubles draw. The pair has compiled four wins on the fall season, as the duo last competed together with a quarterfinals run at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. (Oct 5-13).
The tournament will open with the men's competition taking place at The Tennis Club at Newport and the women playing at Newport Beach Tennis Club Wednesday through Friday before all play moves to Newport Beach Tennis Club on Saturday and Sunday. Wednesday's competition will begin at 8 a.m., starting with round of 64 singles action followed by round of 32 doubles action to conclude the first day.
