Women’s tennis standout McCartney Kessler to participate in elite national tournament in Newport Beach, Calif.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – After winning eight matches in the month of October, No. 23 McCartney Kessler will look to continue her streak of success when she kicks off play at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships this Wednesday, Nov. 6 at Newport Beach Tennis Club and The Tennis Club at Newport Beach in Newport Beach, Calif.
The Oracle ITA National Fall Championships features 64 of the nation's top female collegiate singles players and 32 doubles teams. In its third year, having replaced the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, it is the lone event on the collegiate tennis calendar to feature competitors from all five divisions playing in the same tournament.
Kessler competed in the event a season ago, advancing to the second round of the singles main draw.
A total of 40 players earn automatic qualification into the singles draw based on their performance in a series of prior fall events (Oracle ITA Masters, Milwaukee Tennis Classic, ITA All-Americans, ITA Cup and ITA Regionals).
Kessler, one of those to earn an automatic bid, secured the ITA Southeastern Regional singles crown 16 days ago in Tallahassee.
Seven of the top 10-ranked individuals in the Oracle ITA Division I Preseason National Rankings are in the women's singles draw, including No.2 Estela Perez-Somarriba (Miami, Fla.), No. 4 Alexa Graham (North Carolina), No. 5 Kelly Chen (Duke), No. 6 Michaela Gordon (Stanford), No. 7 Sara Daavettila (North Carolina), No. 8 Anna Rogers (NC State) and No. 9 Jada Hart (UCLA).
Kessler holds the nation's 23rd ranking.
The women's singles draw also includes ITA Cup Champions Tatiana Simova (ASA Miami; Junior College), Elyse Lavender (Brenau; NAIA), Justine Leong (Claremont-Mudd-Scripps; NCAA DIII) and Berta Bonardi (West Florida; NCAA DII).
Kessler last took the court at the ITA Regionals, Oct. 18-21. The junior won six-straight matches over the four-day period without dropping a single set.
The Georgia native has put together an incredible run this fall, winning 15 matches and dropping just five.
The Fall National Championships are the final ITA event on the docket for the UF women's tennis team. Several players are expected to continue playing professional tournaments, however. The Gators kick off their 2020 spring season, Jan. 10-12, when they travel to The Bahamas for the Pink Flamingo Cup at Baha Mar Resort.
