GAINESVILLE, Fla. – After claiming the SEC Regular Season Championship, first since 2005, and finishing undefeated in league play, the third-ranked and top-seeded Florida Gators (20-2) are set to host the 2019 SEC Men's Tennis Championships at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex beginning Wednesday afternoon. The championship match is set for Sunday, April 21 at 2 p.m.
Florida will open play on Friday at 12 p.m., as the top-four teams received a bye into the quarterfinals. The Gators will face the winner of No. 26 and eighth-seeded Ole Miss and No. 21 and ninth-seeded Alabama. The Rebels and the Crimson Tide will meet on Thursday at 3 p.m.
Friday's schedule has been updated due to the weather forecast. No. 3 seed Texas A&M will now face the winner of South Carolina and LSU at 8 a.m. on courts 7-12 and no live scoring or streaming will be available. No. 2 seed Mississippi State's quarterfinal match against the winner of Kentucky and Vanderbilt has been moved up to be played simultaneously at 8 a.m. Mississippi State will play on courts 1-6. The final match of the afternoon will pit No. 4 seeded Tennessee against the winner of Georgia and Arkansas. That match has been moved up to 4 p.m.
However, in the event that the matches are moved indoors, Texas A&M will take court first, followed by Mississippi State. Florida will be the third match on the court and we will conclude the day with Tennessee's match. Seating indoors is on a first come first serve basis and we will not have live scoring or live streaming.
Florida finished the conference regular season 12-0, marking the first undefeated season since 2003. The Gators outscored their SEC opponents 70-14 and only dropped the doubles point in four of those 12 matches. They have also won 16 consecutive matches at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex dating back to last season.
As a team, Florida enters the tournament at No. 3 in the ITA rankings and has been in the top-5 for five consecutive weeks. The Gators are among seven SEC teams ranked in the top-25, while 12 checked into the top-50.
The Gators boast five ranked singles players and four ranked doubles tandems in the latest ITA Rankings. Sophomore Oliver Crawford leads the way for Florida at No. 11, while Johannes Ingildsen and Brian Berdusco are Florida's highest ranked duo, coming in at No. 24.
Freshman Sam Riffice, rotating between the No. 2 and No. 3 singles positions, finished the regular season on a 12-match winning streak and was 10-0 against SEC opponents. The Orlando native became the first Florida freshman since Jesse Levine in 2007 to finish their first conference regular season undefeated in singles play.
The Gators closed out the regular season with eight or more since wins in SEC play from six players and no player recorded more than three losses in conference singles play. Sophomore Duarte Vale is also undefeated in SEC play and is in the midst of 10-match winning streak. The depth of Florida's singles lineup is evident in the combined 62-10 record in league action, dropping only three matches at No. 4-6.
Despite struggling in doubles early on, Florida has found its groove after making some lineup changes. It earned the doubles point in the last three matches of the season and has now gained that early advantage 15 times this season.
Earlier this season, Florida defeated Ole Miss 6-1 at home, while sweeping Alabama 7-0 in Tuscaloosa.
The Gators will look to be the first team to win the SEC regular season title and the conference tournament title on their home court since Texas A&M was named co-champions in 2015 and won the tournament in College Station that same year.
The last time Florida won the SEC tournament was in 2016 when it defeated Georgia 4-2 in Columbia. S.C. The Gators also claimed the tournament title in 2011 which is the last time the SEC Championships were held in Gainesville.
