Gators host second-straight home match and final non-league tilt before SEC play.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida women's tennis team is set to host its second-straight home match Saturday when it welcomes Georgia State to the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex. First serve is slated for Noon ET as Florida takes on its final non-conference opponent before SEC play commences at the end of the month.
Match Time Change Note: Please note that the Gators' match vs. Georgia State was initially scheduled for 10 a.m. but has been pushed back until Noon due to expected cool temperatures in the area.
Florida (2-2) last took to the courts this past Friday when it dispatched visiting North Florida, 6-1. For the first time in the 2020 campaign, the Gators seized the doubles point en route to their convincing win. Utilizing new-look doubles pairings, the Gators achieved success and set the tone early. In singles play, UF snatched victories on three-straight courts to open, thus clinching the match.
Marlee Zein, Sydney Berlin, Ida Jarlskog, Victoria Emma and Tsveta Dimitrova all recorded victories.
It was the redshirt-senior Dimitrova who would clinch it from court six and hand the Ospreys their first loss of the 2020 campaign.
After back-to-back defeats, albeit against top 10 programs on their home courts in No. 8 NC State and No.10 Michigan, Florida bounced back with its second win of the season and looks to continue on with the momentum Saturday.
Through four matches, 2019 All-American Ida Jarlskog and Marlee Zein pace the club with two victories each. In doubles, Florida has three tandems with at least one win.
In the latest ITA Rankings, which were issued on Tuesday, Feb. 18, Florida was pegged the No. 41 team in the nation. Individually, Florida saw three singles players crack the rankings in No. 49 McCartney Kessler, No. 68 Layne Sleeth and No. 113 Victoria Emma. The Gators also featured one ranked doubles side in No. 51 Sleeth and Zein.
Georgia State (2-5) has dropped three of its last four matches but has taken on a challenging slate having played two top 50 ITA teams already this season in Baylor and Auburn. The Panthers' No. 1 Eva Chivu owns a 4-1 record to pace the team.
The Panthers play a pair of Sunshine State squads in back-to-back days as they head to Jacksonville to battle UNF on Sunday.
Following Florida's contest with Georgia State, its next match is set for Friday, Feb. 28 when it kicks off its 2020 SEC slate at Alabama.
