No. 3 Gators Cap Weekend with 6-1 Effort over Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The No. 3 University of Florida men's tennis team capped a 2-0 weekend over Big Ten opponents in its first road trip of the season, downing the Purdue Boilermakers (6-4) on Sunday at the Schwartz Tennis Center in West Lafayette, Ind., 6-1. For the second consecutive match, the Gators notched a 4-0 clinch behind its 10th straight doubles point and singles wins from freshman Blaise Bicknell, junior Duarte Vale and sophomore Lukas Greif. Juniors Andy Andrade and Josh Goodger also tallied wins for UF, as the victory moves Florida to 9-1 on the season ahead of next week's National Team Indoor Championships in Madison, Wis. on Feb. 14-17.

The Boilermakers entered Sunday's match riding a five-match win streak, as Purdue gave the Gators its best test in doubles this season up to this point. The doubles point came down to No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, seeing both courts forced into tiebreaks, though, No. 24 Johannes Ingildsen and Will Grant managed to prevail on court two to keep UF's doubles point streak alive at 10 matches.

Juniors Duarte Vale and Josh Goodger brought in the first win as usual in No. 3 doubles, though, the Gators played from behind to start, eventually knotting the score at 4-4 before going on to reel in the next two games and capture the win over Purdue's Sebastian Welch and Tomasz Dudek, 6-4. Vale and Goodger continue to build on their chemistry, moving to 6-0 on the year from the No. 3 position.

Meanwhile, Ingildsen and Grant found themselves in a tiebreak on court two, as No. 13-ranked Oliver Crawford and Sam Riffice won a break and held in No. 1 doubles to take a 6-5 lead before also heading into a tiebreak against Athell Bennett and Julian Saborio. As Crawford and Riffice built a 3-2 lead in their tiebreak, Ingildsen and Grant would go on and save the day in No. 2 doubles, coming away with a 7-6 (5) victory over Purdue's Michal Wozniak and Mateo Julio to secure the 1-0 advantage and push a four-match win streak for the duo at 6-1 on the year.

Upon today's doubles point, UF moves to 20-1 overall in doubles action on the year.

The Gators carried the momentum over into singles, grabbing five first-set wins through the first half of singles action. However, Purdue would manage to nab a late win in No. 1 singles, as court one featured a top-30 matchup between No. 4 Sam Riffice and No. 30 Athell Bennett.

No. 112 Blaise Bicknell returned back to action for the first match since Jan. 26 (USF), as the first-year remains undefeated on the season (5-0) after picking up his third win in No. 6 singles over Saborio in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.

No. 11 Duarte Vale then continued his dominance on the year, corralling a straight-set 6-2, 6-1 decision over Mateo Julio in No. 2 singles to push a 3-0 lead halfway through. Vale remains unbeaten at the No. 2 position (4-0), as the Cascais, Portugal native leads UF with eight dual singles wins on the season thus far.

Sophomore No. 90 Lukas Greif went on to seal the deal for UF shortly after Vale's match, picking up his third victory of the season at No. 5 singles over Welch, 6-2, 6-2, to clinch the win at 4-0 for the Gators. The match would continue despite the result, as Goodger would go on to post a 6-4, 6-4 decision in No. 4 singles over Purdue's Maksymillian Raupuk to move to 4-0 at the No. 4 position.

In the midst of UF's first three singles victories, Purdue's No. 30 Bennett opened his No. 1 singles matchup with No. 4 Riffice up a set, 6-2, prior to Riffice answering in the second with a 7-5 decision to force a super tiebreaker. The two left it all on the court, though, Bennett would manage to hold the hot hand late, coming away with a 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 decision in the third to give Riffice his first loss at the top spot and put the Boilermakers on the board, 5-1.

Nonetheless, Andy Andrade wrapped things up in No. 3 singles, adding his sixth dual win of the year in straight sets over Wozniak, 6-3, 6-4, to conclude the match in UF's favor at 6-1.

Florida moves to 34-24 all-time against Big Ten opponents. Additionally, the win against Purdue serves as the first for the Gators under Bryan Shelton's tenure.

Head Coach Bryan Shelton
On team's performance indoors this weekend…
"Our team competed very well this weekend. Purdue applied a lot of pressure in the doubles and we answered the questions they posed very well today. Our competitive spirit was really good. We didn't always play our best tennis throughout the weekend, but we are learning more about ourselves and we will continue to improve."
