UF Track and Field Set to Close Indoor Season at NCAA Championships
Wednesday, March 10, 2021 | Track and Field
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Gators track and field teams are back in action this week as they head to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to close their indoor season at this year's NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships. The championship meet is scheduled to take place from Thursday through Saturday inside the Randal Tyson Track Center with televised coverage on ESPN3.
The women, who rank fifth on the latest USTFCCCA national poll, will head to NCAAs with 12 entries—which ties for second-most nationally and in the SEC. Meanwhile the men, who also check in at No. 5, boast the fourth-most entries in the nation and third in the conference with 10.
Florida's 22 combined entries is the second-most in the nation.
Freshman Talitha Diggs, who is seeded No. 2 in the 400 meters, will look to earn her first national title after being crowned conference champion two weeks ago. Diggs clocked a time of 51.14 seconds to become the second-fastest 400-meter runner in UF history. Senior Taylor Manson, who enters the race as the No. 4 seed after winning silver at SECs, will join Diggs in the 400 meters.
On the men's side, Senior Thomas Mardal—who earned his fourth consecutive NCAA Indoors berth, will represent the Gators in the weight throw. The No. 1 seed in the event, Mardal was crowned SEC champion earlier this season with a school record-breaking mark of 24.16 meters (79 feet, 3.75 inches), making him the fifth-best performer in collegiate history.
On the track for the men, sophomore Joseph Fahnbulleh heads to Fayetteville as the No. 2 seed in the 200 meters. Fahnbulleh finished second in the conference with a time of 20.32 seconds that ranks second in the world and in school history. He will be joined by fellow second-year sprinter Tyler Davis.
Senior Raymond Ekevwo, who ranks tied for third in the nation, will headline the 60 meters. Meanwhile also a No. 3 seed, sophomore Grace Stark will compete in the 60-meter hurdles.
On the distance front, redshirt sophomore Gabrielle Wilkinson, who earned silver at indoors this year, will compete in the 800 meters, while junior Imogen Barrett will represent the Gators in the mile.
Florida's men will be represented by junior PJ Austin and newcomer Malcolm Clemons in the long jump. Clemons will then join junior Jonathan Miller in the triple jump. On the women's side, freshman Claire Bryant will compete in the long jump, while redshirt seniors Natricia Hooper and Kala Penn will headline the triple jump.
The Gators women's 4x400-meter relays team, which checks in as the No. 5 seed after earning bronze at SECs, will compete in the NCAA championship meet for the 11th consecutive time. Meanwhile, the men's squad will return to nationals for its 26th overall appearance since 1996.
