SEATTLE – Senior Andy Andrade broke the program record for the most career singles wins in program history with 121 en route to a top-10 victory against the No. 7 Virginia Cavaliers, 4-2, in the consolation draw of the ITA Indoor National Team Championships on Saturday afternoon.
The No. 5 Florida Gators (6-2) secured the doubles point after picking up decisive victories at courts one and two. Virginia (5-5) edged the Gators for just a few minutes after Ryan Goetz and William Woodall took the match from Abedallah Shelbayh and Duarte Vale, 6-3, at court three.
But, the advantage was short-lived.
Sam Riffice and Ben Shelton defeated Bar Botzer and Chris Rodesch at court one with a score of 6-3, then the No. 44 duo of Andrade and Mattias Siimar immediately followed with a 6-2 win over Inaki Montes and Jeffrey von der Schulenburg at court two to clinch the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead over the Cavaliers heading into singles play.
Virginia evened the score 1-1 after Gianni Ross defeated Lukas Greif at court six, 6-0, 6-2.
The tie didn't last long as Andrade posted a record-breaking victory at court four, beating No. 120-ranked player, Botzer, in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-2. With this win, Andrade broke the program record for career singles wins, overtaking Justin O'Neal (1997-00) for sole possession of the record with 121 career singles victories.
The Gators collected another ranked win, this time at court one, when No. 92 Riffice took the match from No. 30 Montes in two sets, 6-3, 6-2, putting Florida up 3-1 in the process.
Virginia chipped away – getting a win at court three, then going into three sets in the remaining two matches.
At court five, Josh Goodger was able to force No. 29 Goetz to a third set after winning set two, 6-3.
However, it was No. 3 Shelton who clinched the match for Florida as he defeated No. 17 Rodesch, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. Shelton picked up his team-leading ninth ranked win of the season and third top-20 victory.
