BOX SCORE
CHICAGO – Florida ended its trip to the ITA National Indoor Championships with a 4-1 loss to Stanford on Sunday evening.
The Gators went 1-2 on the weekend with losses to two Pac-12 teams. Florida also extended its drought as it has not won more than one match at the Indoor Championships since 2010.
The No. 4 Gators took an early 1-0 lead as McClain Kessler and Duarte Vale clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 win on court one. Alfredo Perez and Johannes Ingildsen earned the other doubles win to help give Florida the early advantage.
Stanford took control in singles. Florida dropped four of the first sets and Stanford quickly took a 3-1 lead with straight set wins over Sam Riffice, Oliver Crawford and Ingildsen.
Andy Andrade and Kessler both claimed first set victories, but dropped the second and were forced to play the winner-take-all third set. Vale forced a third set as he won the tiebreak over Sangreet Sridhar in the second.
In the third set, Vale was serving for match point at 5-1 and Andrade held a 5-4 advantage on court 2, but Timothy Sah defeated Kessler 7-5, 7-5 in the final two sets to clinch the match for the Cardinals. Vale and Andrade's matches went unfinished.
Up next, Florida will have two weeks as it prepares to open conference play. The Gators will head to Fayetteville, Ark. for a match with the Razorbacks on March 3 at 2 p.m.
Gator Quotes
"Congratulations to Stanford for playing a gritty match tonight. We got a lot out of this event and we appreciate the University of Illinois and Midtown Athletic Club for hosting such a great tournament. Playing three night matches in a row is always a tough challenge but I know the lessons we learned here will help us throughout the season. We actually came out and did a nice job with our doubles, but they jumped on us early in the singles, which rattled our team tonight. Our guys are really disappointed, but we'll bounce back and get ready for our conference season. We will respond." – Head Coach Bryan Shelton
