SEATTLE – The No. 14 Texas Longhorns (7-3) defeated the No. 5 Florida Gators (5-2), 4-3, in the first round of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships on Friday afternoon at the Nordstrom Tennis Complex.
For the second time in just 33 days, the Gators and the Longhorns faced off. But, unlike the last match, Texas was able to take doubles point from Florida. The Longhorns first got a win at court two, as Siem Woldeab and Pierre-Yves Bailly defeated No. 44 Andy Andrade and Mattias Siimar, 6-2.
Then, the Longhorns clinched the doubles point with a win at court one as Richard Ciamarra and Cleeve Harper beat Sam Riffice and Ben Shelton, 6-4. Abedallah Shelbayh and Duarte Vale were tied at court three with Chih Chi Huang and Micah Braswell, 4-4, when the doubles point was clinched.
Florida needed four singles wins to get the victory over the No. 14 team, but fell just short. Even though the Gators dropped four of six first sets, they fought back to win three singles matches. Both teams also forced four different three-set matches.
Florida was able to tie the match at 1-1 when No. 33 Siimar picked up his fourth dual-match singles win with a straight-set victory over Woldeab, 6-1, 7-6 (4), at court five. So far, Siimar is 4-0 in dual match play without dropping a set.
Texas retook the lead after No. 57 Braswell defeated No. 92 Riffice at court one by a couple scores of 7-5.
Andrade hit a huge milestone in his tennis career after picking up his 120th career singles win with a victory over Eliot Spizzirri at court four. The Longhorn, who normally plays at court one for Texas, took the first set, 6-3. The Gator fought back to beat Spizzirri 6-3, 6-2 over the next two sets to tie it back up at 2-all against Texas. With this victory, Andrade tied the program record with Justin O'Neal (1997-00) in all-time career singles wins with 120.
Just minutes later, the Longhorns would retake the lead, 3-2, after pulling out a three-set win on court three as No. 75 Ciamarra beat Vale, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
Down to two matches or courts two and six, Florida and Texas were getting down to the wire. At court six, senior Josh Goodger forced a third set against No. 110 Harper before ultimately winning the match. The Longhorn took the first set, 6-2, but Goodger reversed that score with a 6-2 second-set victory of his own to force a third-set. The back-and-forth match went into a third-set tiebreak, where the Gator edged Ciamarra, 7-6 (5), to tie the match at 3-3.
Just like last month's contest, it came down to No. 3 Shelton and No. 62 Bailly. Shelton was able to win his first set in a tough breaker, 7-6 (4), to take an early lead over Bailly. The Longhorn went ahead 5-2 in set two, before Shelton won the next two games for a 5-4 score. Bailly pulled away in the next game, however, to even the match with a 6-4 second set. The Longhorn came out firing in the final set after taking a 5-0 lead. Again, Shelton never backed down and won the next two games before the Longhorn clinched the match for Texas with a 6-2 third set.
UP NEXT: No. 5 Florida will take on No. 7 Virginia in the consolation draw on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 3 p.m. in the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
