Saturday, February 5, 2022 | Men's Tennis
LAKE NONA, Fla. – For the second time in a week, the Florida Gators (5-1) defeated the Florida State Seminoles (6-2), 4-1, at the USTA National Campus for College MatchDay on Saturday evening. Coming into this match, the Gators and Seminoles were split 2-2 in College MatchDay contests, before Florida took a 3-2 advantage with its victory.
Just like last weekend's contest, Florida State started the match with a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point.
FSU took the match at court one as Sebastian Arcila and Loris Pourroy defeated Sam Riffice and Ben Shelton, 6-3.
Gators Abedallah Shelbayh and Duarte Vale enacted their revenge on Andreja Petrovic and Youcef Rihane, a duo who defeated Shelbayh and Vale last weekend, and evened the doubles play with a 6-3 victory at court two. With this win, Vale moves to ninth all-time in school history with 82 career doubles victories.
But, just seconds after the Shelbayh/Vale tandem won, Will Grant and Lukas Greif dropped their match to Maks Silagy and Josh Karpenschif on court three, 4-6, and the Seminoles took a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Needing four singles wins to clinch the match, Riffice delivered the Gators their first point of the competition at court one to tie it at 1-all. The senior captain won in straight sets, claiming the first one by a 6-4 score, then putting up a bagel in the second set, 6-0, to win it.
No. 2 Shelton followed with another win for Florida about 10 minutes later, taking a 2-1 lead over the Seminoles on court two. Shelton faced Arcila, posting a straight-set victory by a score of 6-4, 6-2, to give Florida the advantage.
The Gators went up 3-1 after a close match at court three, where captain Vale earned a victory over Petrovic. Vale went up 6-3 in the first set, before going into a tiebreak with the Seminole in set two. The Gator went on to win the breaker by a score of 7-6 (4) to earn the team's third point of the match. This win also gives him his 98th career singles victory.
Florida needed just one more win to clinch the match.
Two Gators, No. 111 Josh Goodger and No. 79 Nate Bonetto, were in three-set battles on courts five and six, respectively. Both lost their first sets, but didn't falter. They ended up winning their second sets to force a third.
While Goodger and Bonetto were into set three, No. 107 Andy Andrade was trying to put FSU's Richard Thongoana away. In their third match against each other this season, with a 1-1 split over the year, Andrade won this second contest against the Seminole to clinch the match for the Gators.
Andrade took set one by a score of 6-4, then battled Thongoana in the second. The Seminole went up 5-4, looking to force a third set, but the senior from Bradenton, Fla., didn't let him. Andrade won the next three games to win his 119th career singles match and clinch the victory for Florida.
The Gators head to Seattle for the ITA Indoor National Team Championships on Feb. 18-21 after qualifying last weekend with a win over the Seminoles in the Gainesville regional.
